For many Americans, St. Patrick’s day is a day of celebration, wearing green, and corned beef and cabbage. Over time, the day has become increasingly popular in the United States. With 34.5 million Americans who report that they have at least partial Irish ancestry (which is seven times more than the population of Ireland), the day is extremely popular as it is viewed as a celebration of Irish heritage.
Every year on March 17, the Irish Prime Minister comes over to speak with the President of the United States. This year Prime Minister Enda Kenny delivered a powerful speech about the opportunities available in the United States as well as St. Patrick’s immigrant story.
For a long time, many people from Ireland have been immigrating to the United States. For a long time though, Irish Americans faced significant discrimination. Nonetheless though, Irish Americans have played an integral role in many aspects of American society for decades and longer.
