At Cleveland State University, the Student Socialist Society decided to take part in National Autism Awareness Month by posting a sign that stated “Ignore autistic people” and “Autism Speaks is a hate group.”

When confronted on why they posted the sign, the students who were tabling said the autism awareness group “doesn’t care about autistic people” and to instead support Autistic Self Advocacy Network.

The socialist students further stated the reason why Autism Speaks is a hate group is because it is not a “by autistic people, for autistic people” type of organization.

Autism Speaks have been criticized by other autism advocates for not properly addressing the stigma of people with autism. Autism Women’s Network, for example, has also claimed Autism Speaks is a hate group based on the definitions from the FBI and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
