San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick has caused massive controversy over opting not to stand during the national anthem. Now, one small business owner is responding in a very unique way.
A replica of the Kaepernick’s jersey sits as a doormat at the entrance of the owner’s mattress store, beside a sign inviting customers to wipe their feet. The owner Dave Gerwing explained his decision to use the creative doormat is a counter-protest to Kaepernick’s actions.
“People have made the ultimate sacrifice. They have died for our freedoms,” Gerwing explained. “Sitting down on your butt is nothing more than a disservice and disrespect to the people fighting for our rights.”
“Does he have the right to protest? Absolutely,” Gerwing added. “The same way I have the right to put his jersey on the floor. This is not a race issue for me. If this were Eli Manning doing this, his jersey would be on the floor right now as well.”
Kaepernick’s anthem boycott is meant to call attention to “racial injustice” toward what he deemed “oppressed” minorities.
“We do have racial issues in this country,” Gerwing says. “Is this country perfect? Absolutely not. There are issues that do need to be dealt with, but it’s pretty, pretty good, if you ask me.”
