Yesterday, March 9th, 2017 many protested at the Texas Capitol. They were protesting Senate Bill 6 which states that when in public/government buildings and public schools and universities you must use the restroom that follows the sex on your birth certificate.

This is not an LGBT issue. This is about the safety of women and children. In 2015, according to the FBI, there were over 90,000 rapes which is simply unacceptable. By definition, rape is “UCR definition of rape is: penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim. Attempts or assaults to commit rape are also included in the statistics presented here.” This does not include sexual assault, statutory rape or incest. This number has gone up 7.1 % since 2011 when it should be decreasing. We must do what we can to protect ourselves from those who want to assault us.

Senate Bill 6 passed the Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs in a 7-1 vote. It will now go before the Texas State Senate where it is expected the bill will pass. This is a necessary thing to make sure that predators do not take advantage of women and children in the most private place of their life. When you are in the bathroom you are vulnerable to sexual assault. If this is truly about transgender rights go through the Proprocess of switching sexes and getting a new birth certificate. If you are unsure about what gender you want to follow you should seek the help of a psychologist and not go to any bathroom you think is appropriate.

The bill does state that businesses have the right to do what they want as they are a free enterprise. However, that has not stopped much backlash from companies such as Google, The NFL, and American Airlines. These companies to do not understand the impact of what assaults do to a person’s psyche. The claim they make that “the bill legalizes discrimination” is simply false. This bill is not about discrimination but rather enacting public safety. It was not designed to take away people’s freedoms. Senate Bill 6 was designed to keep people safe.
