“It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning,” Simon Halls, a spokesperson for Fisher’s family, told People magazine.
Fisher was the daughter of actress Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher. She debuted in the Broadway show Irene as a young teenager. Fisher’s first movie role was in 1975’s Shampoo.
Afterwards, she enrolled in London’s Central School of Speech and Drama and then St. Lawrence College, where she dropped out at just 19 years old to take on the biggest role of her life. In 1977, Fisher starred as Princess Leia in George Lucas’ Star Wars. Little did she know that role would change her life forever.
Fisher continued to play the iconic role of the princess in the sequels Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and finally The Force Awakens in 2015.
Fisher is also the mother of actress Billie Lourd.
Many of her fellow Star Wars actors publicly paid tribute to their late friend.
“Carrie was one-of-a-kind, brilliant, original,” said Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo alongside Fisher. “Funny and emotionally fearless. She lived her life, bravely. My thoughts are with her daughter Billie, her mother Debbie, her brother Todd and her many friends. We will all miss her.”
“I’m deeply saddened at the news of Carrie’s passing,” tweeted Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian. “She was a dear friend, whom I greatly respected and admired. The force is dark today!”
Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, brother of Princess Leia, tweeted a short message:

George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, also released a statement about Fisher’s death.
“Carrie and I have been friends most of our adult lives,” Lucas said. “She was extremely smart; a talented actress, writer and comedienne with a very colorful personality that everyone loved. In Star Wars, she was our great and powerful princess — feisty, wise and full of hope in a role that was more difficult than most people might think. My heart and prayers are with Billie, Debbie and all Carrie’s family, friends and fans. She will be missed by all.”
May the Force be with her, always.
