In a recent report released by the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation (VOC) and YouGov called “The Annual Report on U.S. Attitudes towards Socialism”, we find out that millennials are quite unfamiliar with communist leaders. 40 % don’t know who Che Guevarra is, 33% haven’t heard of Vladimir Lenin, 32% don’t care to know who Karl Marx is, and 18% of millennials have never heard of Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Putin.

“In its first annual report, the foundation said the survey, conducted with 2,300 people, found that some millennials also believe that President George W. Bush killed more people than Joseph Stalin” reported the Christian Post. “Stalin was responsible for deaths of 20 to 60 million people before and after World War II” yet only “32 percent of millennials still believe that more people were killed under Bush than Stalin.”

“Roughly half of millennials (55%) believe Communism was and still is a problem – compared with 80% of Baby Boomers and 91% of elderly Americans,” stated VOC in a press release.

“The study found a growing acceptance of Socialist and Marxist viewpoints among a younger generation of Americans who did not grow up during the Cold War,” the report said. “When considered alongside the broad support among millennials for Bernie Sanders and his ideals — the poll, for example, found more support for quotes of Sanders than Milton Friedman and the Bible — Socialism has growing support in America.”

“So, in essence, Millennials were more likely to agree with Sanders and Marx than they were with the biblical sentiment found in 2 Thessalonians 3:10. This is just one of the indicators, though, that some say point to the need for increased education efforts surrounding the pitfalls of socialism and communism,” said Billy Hallowell.

“Fewer younger Americans, in turn, had a favorable view of capitalism and its tenets versus their older counterparts. The report also found a substantial gap in basic knowledge about communism and its history, with more glaring knowledge gaps especially among millennials,” read the press release by VOC.

“This report clearly reveals a need for educating our youth on the dangerous implications of socialist ideals,” said Marion Smith, executive director of the organization. “We will continue to work with educators to build curriculum to address this important need.”
