French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen cancels meeting with Lebanese top officials after she refused to wear a Muslim headscarf.
The leader of the Front National, France’s far-right political party, Marine Le Pen canceled a meeting on Tuesday with the Grand Mufti of Lebanon as she rejected to wear a Muslim headscarf to the meeting. The visit to Lebanon was to gather support ahead of the first round of the French presidential election later this year in April.
Le Pen articulated to reporters that she was not expecting the demand that she must wear a headscarf. She stated that she has had meetings with other Grand Muftis without a problem. One of those instances was when she met with a Grand Mufti on a trip she made to Egypt in 2015 and didn’t have to wear a headscarf.
“The highest Sunni authority didn’t have this requirement, but it doesn’t matter. You can pass on my respects to the Grand Mufti, but I will not cover myself up.”
However a spokesman for the Grand Mufti alleges that Le Pen was informed about the headscarf situation prior to the scheduled meeting.
Spokesman Khaldoun Awas stated,
“I personally greeted her at the door of the Edict House and wanted to hand her a white headscarf that was in my hand, she refused to take it. I urged her to put it on, she refused and said she would not put it on and walked out without attending the previously agreed upon meeting with the Mufti. The Edict House regrets such inappropriate behavior at such meetings.”
A current law in France forbids public officials or high school students from donning headscarves. France cites the separation of church and state and women’s rights to justify this law. Le Pen has also expressed that she would bar headscarves from being worn in public places altogether.
The Vice President of the Front National praised Le Pen for her refusing to wear a headscarf. He states, “In Lebanon, Marine refuses to wear the veil. A beautiful message of freedom and emancipation sent to women in France and the world!”
This shows a strong contrast to that of the self-proclaimed “First Feminist Government” of Sweden when they, without protest, wore a Muslim headscarf to a meeting they had with the Iranian president.
