Donald Trump doesn’t need a ‘Take Your Daughter to Work Day’- his daughter is moving into an office in the West Wing of the White House.
Although Ivanka Trump will not have a government role or salary, she will be maintaining a West Wing office. Ivanka has been a presence around the White House since her father’s inauguration in January, and has been an influence in policy since before the campaign began. On Friday, she was even included in a meeting on vocational training that President Trump had with Chancellor Merkel of Germany.
Jamie Gorelick, ethics adviser and attorney to Ivanka Trump, let The Associated Press know that Ivanka will not be a government employee, but will receive government communication devices and some security clearance. Discussing Ivanka following the ethics code that applies to government employees, she stated:
“Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not. The White House Counsel’s Office agrees with that approach.”
Ivanka was a popular and sought out surrogate on the campaign trail for her father. After he was elected, she moved her family to Washington D.C.
Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner, now serves as senior adviser to the president. Federal anti-nepotism laws are in place to prevent the appointing of relatives to government positions or offices. However, the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel recently clarified that the president has ‘special hiring authority’, and is therefore cleared to hire Kushner as adviser.
Trump has stated that some of his daughter’s financial information will be included in husband Kushner’s disclosures.
Ivanka has distanced herself from her personal brands and business affairs in light of this new political positioning. She continues to own her own personal brand, but management and daily decision making have been handed over to the company president. The business is not allowed to make any new deals with a foreign state during her absence. She has also set up a board of trustees to help with the decision making, and if questions come up, trustees will confer with Ivanka’s attorney and adviser Gorelick.
