Aquin High School has a system in place for prom to make sure everyone has a date. The system involves a lottery where male students randomly pick the names of females in the library and go into gym, where the girls are waiting, and reveal who they picked through a skit.
According to the tradition, everyone has to accept the outcomes.
The school has done this for 91 years and the students there think it is a great tradition. As Senior Dennis Neery told WREX, “New dates, new skits, it’s always fun. The new themes for the prom, it’s always a great experience.”
Junior class advisor Michelle Gallagher said it is not seen as a “date”, but as something to do as a school, according to TIME.
“I think most people are in disbelief and a lot of people say they would hate it, but I think after they kind of hear the rest of the story and hear what goes into it I think a lot of people are actually intrigued by it. It’s less of a date and more like something fun to do with your classmates.”
