A college football player punched a referee during a stoppage in play during a game Saturday night, sending the unconscious referee crashing to the ground.

The Ventura County Star reports that the football player was immediately ejected from the game and later arrested on suspicion of battery and taken to Ventura County jail. Trainers from both Mount San Antonio and Ventura College immediately raced onto the field to help the injured official. The official was replaced and did not return to the game.
