A Florida mosque attended by Omar Mateen, the ISIS-inspired gunman who slaughtered 49 people and injured scores more in the Orlando nightclub shooting, was set ablaze. The incident was likely intentional arson by an unidentified individual.
The fire broke out early Monday morning at the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce and no one was reportedly injured.
Video shows a person approaching the side of the mosque, followed by a flash. The person is then seen fleeing, Maj. David Thompson of the sheriff’s office said.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze. Photos released by the sheriff’s office showed the structure appeared to be intact.
The fire occurred the day after the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
“Right now I don’t want to speculate on a motive,” Maj. David Thompson said during an overnight press conference. “We all know the implications of the date and the time of year, this is the 9/11 anniversary. Is that related? I would not want to speculate but it is in the back of our minds.”
“This is a horrible tragedy, not only for the Islamic Center, but also for our community,” Thompson added.
