Kaylee Carlson and Makayla Martin are Auburn’s 1-2 pitching rotation. Auburn lost a ton of pitchers going into this season due to graduation. Most teams have at least 3 or 4 starting pitchers they can use throughout the year. Auburn has Kaylee Carlson and Makayla Martin who are both tremendous aces. Both sporting double digit win totals and below a 1.45 ERA Auburn’s starting pitching is definitely up there with the best in the country.
For Makayla Martin in her freshman season last year she held a 15-4 record and pitched four complete games. She had a fantastic 1.57 ERA in 32 appearances starting in 18 games. She pitched a total of 116.0 innings and finished with 64 strikeouts and held opponents to hit just .215 she also started final game of the Championship Series and threw 6.0 innings with one strikeout and did not allow a single earned run versus Oklahoma. So needless to say, Makayla had a really impressive Freshman season which is why going into this year Auburn was confident Kaylee and Makayla would be able to handle the work load.
This year Makayla has appeared in 20 games so far and started in 17 of those games just 1 under her start total of last year. She has a total of 6 complete games and has pitched a total of 97.0 innings so far. Hitters are averaging just .199 so far and with a 13-4 record and a 1.44 era Makayla has been having a pretty excellent Sophomore season so far. Even with the added pressure she’s been able to respond very well. She knew she’d have to step up her game this year and definitely has.
I believe the fact that she’s pitching on a team with her best friend Carlson is also a big help. They’re both extremely competitive but they both want the other to do well. It’s a friendly competition that I believe helps both pitchers get better.
Makayla has a large number of ways to beat batters and in my opinion is one of the best drop ball pitchers in the game at the moment also mixes in a pretty nasty change up as well. She has definitely improved as pitcher over the last year and even so far this year. She’s also not someone who gets flustered no matter what is going. Regardless of what the score is or what happens on the field behind her she stays focused on the next out. For someone that is only a sophomore she plays more like a senior which is great for Auburn.
Only time will tell but between Makayla and Kaylee this team is in amazing shape on pitching and there’s absolutely no reason this team doesn’t make it back to the WCWS and finish the job they started last year and cap this year off with a championship win.
