Several months ago it was reported that The Satanic Temple was looking to start After School Satan Clubs in schools districts which also hosted Good News Clubs, which are Christian after school programs. The main focus of the After School Satan clubs is to go against the work of the Good News Clubs as explained on their website. The Satan Club says they want to give the children “an opportunity to realize that the evangelical materials now creeping into their schools are representative of but one religious opinion amongst many.”

Because of a 2001 Supreme Court ruling, Good News Bible Club vs. Milford Central School District, schools must allow all organizations to have access to use school property. “Christian evangelicals — particularly the Child Evangelism Fellowship — have taken advantage of this ruling ever since. As it is illegal for the schools to discriminate against specific religions or preference others, After School Satan Clubs cannot be denied wherever Christian, or any other religious clubs, operate,” explains The Satanic Temple.

Duncan Fobes, of the Seattle-based law firm Patterson, Buchanan, Fobes and Leitch, is the lawyer who was hired to represent the Mount Vernon School District. He thinks that if the school district denies the application for the after school ‘Satan Club’ then the school district would face costly litigation.

“We believe that it’s clear that, because the district has a policy and procedure that encourages the use of community groups to use your facilities, because you do that, you must open it to this group,” Fobes said. “You don’t have to sponsor the group, you don’t have to help the group.”

The Skagit Valley Herald reported that, “The Mount Vernon district is one of nine throughout the country that has been chosen by the Satanic Temple to host a pilot After School Satan Club program because the districts also host a Good News Bible Club, which is run by the Child Evangelism Fellowship.”

“Very unfortunately, our hands are tied in this question,” School Board President Rob Coffey said. “We must make our facilities available — and in many cases we are eager to make them available — to Boys & Girls Clubs, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts. We must make them available whether we like the group or not. There really is no opportunity for us to say no to the Satanic Temple or the After School Satan Club.”

It seems as if the only motive that The Satanic Temple has for wanting to open up After School Satan Clubs is to cause a disturbance and go against anything that is Christian, hence them wanting to open up clubs only in school districts that have Good News Clubs. Legally they have all the right to open up their clubs in any school they choose too. But is it right? I know the answer but what do you think about The Satanic Temple getting one step closer to opening these after school clubs. Let me know below!
