It has been revealed that within the last few week, the FBI arrested a contractor with the NSA who allegedly stole and disclosed classified computer information which potentially would allow for the hacking of networks of foreign governments.
If this holds true, it would be the second time in recent years when a contractor with the NSA stole and release classified information. Back in 2013, Edward Snowden seized numerous documents and later released them to the public via different media outlets. In doing this, a number of NSA programs, which many have considered to be unconstitutional, were exposed.
Since then, Snowden has been forced to seek refuge, as any return to the United States would very quickly result in his arrest. Depending upon the charges that could be made, it would be possible for him to be charged with treason.
The company which both the potential whistleblowers worked for, Booz Allen Hamilton, is responsible for maintaining the NSA’s most sensitive cyberoperations.
It is believed that the most recent breach was involving highly protected “source codes,” access to this information would ultimately allow him to access computer systems of different governments across the world.
The intentions of the theft are not clear. It is not yet known if there will be an attempt to justify the actions by being considered a “whistleblower.”
