Perhaps one of the most widely known individuals in North America is the Mexican drug lord “El Chapo.” The search for him has been constant, and even when he has been caught by Mexican authorities he has seemingly always been able to find a way to escape out of prison. But for the first time he has now been extradited to the United States.

American officials have confirmed that Joaquin Guzman was on a flight to New York today, coming from Cuidad Juarez. “El Chapo” is the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel he had two extradition requests, from California and from Texas. His is wanted for smuggling and trafficking tons upon tons of various illegal drugs.

Last year he was relocated to a prison in Cuidad Juarez, which is just across the border with the United States. The United States had routinely attempted to bring the drug lord into the United States for prosecution. His sentence which he had been serving in Mexico was his third time in a Mexico prison. He had been able to escape out of two high security prisons in Mexico prior.

On top of accusations that he had been the central planner of the cartel which took in billions of dollars in profits, with thousands of workers, he has also been accused of overseeing the hiring of hitmen who kidnapped, murdered, and tortured people for various different reasons.

It is unclear if this decision was made as a result of Donald Trump becoming President of the United States. With the hardline stance he has taken regarding Mexico throughout the campaign, it is certainly possible that the fact he is taking the oath of office tomorrow had an impact on the decision to finally follow through with the American requests for extradition.

Over the coming months and potentially years, it will be interesting to see how Guzman is prosecuted. He is set to be prosecuted by a federal prosecutor, but details surrounding the situation and upcoming trial are not yet clear. There certainly will be more information regarding it moving forward.
