There is one term that is so completely misused that the mere voicing of it makes me, at times, want to roll my eyes and walk away. The term? ‘Close-minded’.
Now, close-minded, in and of itself, is a valuable term.
It is defined as,
‘not willing to consider different ideas or opinions; having or showing a closed mind’. (Merriam-Webster)
A close-minded person is one who is not willing to hear any information that is new or different than what they believe. They’re not willing to consider or chew over anything, or think about the possibility of being wrong. They refuse to have anything thrown at them that will make them think any differently than they currently do.
Do you know who the media and culture in general targets as being close-minded?
So, the question must be answered: Are conservatives close-minded?
The key to this question is in the term open-minded.
‘Open-minded’ is defined as:
‘receptive to arguments or ideas’ (Merriam-Webster)
The important thing to notice in this definition is the word ‘receptive’. Being open-minded doesn’t mean you’ll agree with everything new you hear. All it means is that you’re open to receiving and chewing on new information.
This is extremely important to understand. You are NOT close-minded if you listen to new information, think about it, and decide you don’t believe it or think it’s wrong. You’re close-minded if you refuse to listen to new information at all.
The left would have you believe that conservatives are close-minded because they don’t just openly embrace everything liberal ideology stands for. They would have you think that just because conservatives don’t blindly go along with every new trend in gender identity disorders or religious approval of everyone but Christians, that you’re being intolerant and close-minded.
Ah, yes. ‘Intolerant’. Another word that needs to be brought up in this discussion.
Merriam-Webster defines ‘intolerant’ is defined as:
‘unwilling to grant equal freedom of expression especially in religious matters; unwilling to grant or share social, political, or professional rights’.
Intolerance and close-mindedness go hand in hand. While close-minded people refuse to listen to new ideas, intolerant people go even further and attempt to censor ideas they don’t approve of. They attempt to censor freedom of expression and freedom of legislated or basic human and societal rights.
So, are conservatives close-minded?
There can be close-minded individuals within the conservative movement (as there are within any movement), but the conservative movement itself is not close-minded. Within the movement and ideology, you see people constantly wanting to improve this country, constantly wanting to find the next step toward unity, innovation, and freedom. We search for new ideas, new information, and facts.
No, conservatives are not close-minded. Liberals on the other hand…
