Adele swept the Grammys Sunday night winning in every category she was nominated for, but she broke her Grammy for Album of the Year in half on stage at the award ceremony on Sunday night, a happy accident as she declared it truly belongs to Beyoncé for her album Lemonade.

Adele explained that she believes Beyoncé’s album Lemonade deserved the award more than her own 25.

She enthusiastically claimed onstage:

“The Lemonade album was just so monumental, Beyoncé. It was so monumental and well thought-out and beautiful and soul-bearing… we appreciate that. All of us artists here adore you. You are our light.”

She later added backstage:

“I thought it was her year. What the f*ck does she have to do to win Album of the Year?”

Adele won the night’s most prestigious awards; however, there were also wins for Chance the Rapper and Drake. Beyoncé picked up Best Urban Contemporary Album for Lemonade.

Many on social media compared Adele’s speech to the iconic scene from Mean Girls when Lindsay Lohan’s character Cady Heron broke her Spring Fling queen crown into pieces to share with the other contestants.

However, many on social media also blamed “white privilege” for Beyoncé not winning the Album of the Year award and attributed Adele’s powerful speech to “white guilt”.
