The University of Iowa recently hosted a pro-Palestinian speaker on campus. Remi Kanazi, is known for his pro-Palestinian poems and speeches. Kanazi is also an advisor for the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel. The event was put on by the University of Iowa Student Government, University of Iowa Students for Human Rights, University of Iowa English Department, and Arab Students Association.
Kanazi sells t-shirts through the “Boycott, Divest, and Sanction Movement,” which is a movement to put economic and political pressure on Israel. The t-shirts read “Boycott Israel. Free Palestine.” Kanazi advocates for boycotting buying goods from Israel and is spreading his messages throughout college campuses.
University of Iowa students gathered in protest of Kanazi’s visit, holding signs reading “I stand with Israel” “U of I supports Israel” and “Israel contributes, BDS destroys.”
Kanazi was quick to react to the protestors on Twitter, tweeting “Zionist orgs tried to shut down my event through the administration, get funding stripped. Then protested, passed out pamphlets about me.” Kanazi stated that there were another 20 protestors in the event space, tweeting, “what about dialogue?”
