Finals are upon us, and we all know that we could potentially be insane by the end of the week. Value your sanity? Here are seven tips on how to keep it during finals week.

Get sleep

If you don’t sleep, you’re going to be emotional, burnt out, and also, not at your academic best. Manage your sleep well. Aim for at least 7-8 hours a night during finals week, and take naps when you get the opportunity. If you’re well rested, you are going to have a much better week than if you don’t get much sleep (or irregularly sleep).

Don’t spend all your time studying

I know that the importance of finals can make it tempting to study constantly during finals. However, if you spend all your time studying, you’re going to burn yourself out and not have the full energy to devote to studying that you should have. Go work out, spend time with friends, read-do things that you enjoy so that when you go to study, you’re fully there.

Make a plan

Planning your studying time is a key to success. Schedule exactly how many hours you want to study, and then figure out exactly what you need to get done in each of those hours. Lists are your friends. Plan according to when your finals are as well; if your super difficult final is at the beginning of the week, prioritize that over your simple one at the end of the week.

Eat regularly

As much as your body needs sleep, your body needs fuel. Don’t forgo meals; it will lead to messed up energy, binging on junk food later, and your body not functioning at its highest level. Eat regularly with food that will fuel your body well.

Avoid late night cramming

If you think that by cramming late at night the evening before the test you’ll get a better grade, you’re wrong. Late night cramming will simply stress you out more, make you miss out on sleep, and leave you exhausted the next morning. Instead, follow the steps above and plan studying for your tests earlier than the night before.

Overestimate the amount of time needed to study

Although it’s important to not spend all your time studying, it is equally as important to make sure you have plenty of time to study what you need to go over. The simplest way to do this is to overestimate the time needed to study. If you have a literature exam, and you know you’re really only going to need an hour and a half to study for it, plan for two hours in case you need more time. That way, you’ll have plenty of time to study, and if you get done what was on your list early, you can use that time to do something you enjoy.

Don’t overestimate the importance of finals

Although finals are important, one of the easiest ways to go insane is to endlessly stress about the grades you will receive. A bad grade is just that-a bad grade. It isn’t the end of the world, and it certainly does not determine your worth as a person. You can’t do any better than your best. Give finals week your absolute best, and be content with the results.
