We’ve all experienced it-the times when we feel like we’re inside a pressure cooker. Whether it’s for a couple hours or a couple of weeks, pressured situations can make you go crazy if not handled. Part of handling it is being able to stay cool, calm, and collected while facing crazy pressure.
HERE ARE SEVEN WAYS TO HANDLE PRESSURE:
1. GET OUT
If you’re able to, one of the best ways to bring yourself back to a calm state when facing pressure is to get away from the situation for a bit. If this has been going on for a long time (say, midterms week), try getting away from your normal environment for a few hours and relaxing. If it’s a short term situation, like a stressful shift at work, do whatever you can to step away for a few minutes. Even having a coworker cover for you while you step into the back and cool off for a two minutes is bound to help.
2. SMILE AND LAUGH
There’s a lot to be said about faking it until you make it. If you feel tightly found and about to snap, try laughing it off. Pull up a funny YouTube video, tell a story that always makes you laugh, or simply smile. You’ll be surprised at how much better you feel.
3. MAKE LISTS
Sometimes we’re under pressure because things keep flying at us that we need to handle. If that’s the case, it needs to all be corralled somehow, and a great way to do that is to make lists. List out everything you need to remember and get done, and you’ll be a lot more relaxed knowing that your brain doesn’t need to be stressed about remembering everything.
4. ENLIST HELP
If you just feel like you’re drowning under everything coming at you, grab help! Whether it’s a coworker to help you handle a crazy work situation or a parent who can help you work through the study guide for your test, never be afraid to ask for help. You’ll feel so much better afterward!
5. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
In the midst of a pressured situation, don’t forget to care for yourself. Eat healthy meals, stay hydrated, and go to the gym like usual. Your body doesn’t need to be disrupted from the normal care it receives when it’s already under stress.
6. ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT’S HAPPENING
Sometimes, I think we get so busy dealing with the situation that we forget to actually slow down and think about what’s happening. Take a few seconds, and explain to yourself exactly what’s going on. Remind yourself that you are strong, capable, and more than prepared to handle it. You’d be surprised at how much better your cognitive state will be once you actually acknowledge and process what’s happening.
Although this could go under taking care of yourself, I separated it because sleep is it’s own necessary monster. Lack of sleep is the biggest thing that will make you crumble under pressure. Prioritize it even more highly than usual when you’re feeling the heat, and hold yourself accountable to getting to bed each night. You’re going to need that rest to energize yourself in order to keep holding up under pressure.
