I think one of my favorite parts of being a gym rat is the gear that comes with it. Who doesn’t enjoy shopping for super cute running shoes or the perfect kettle-bell set? However, price tags add up, and just because something looks great, doesn’t mean that you necessarily need it. A few staples will get you by.
HERE ARE FIVE PIECES OF GEAR EVERY FITNESS JUNKIE NEEDS:
1. GREAT SHOES
Do not, DO NOT, think that you can grab an old pair of tennis shoes that have been lounging in your closet and be set. When I started working out, that’s exactly what I did, and my knees and body really regretted it. You will, presumably, be on your feet for your entire, if not ALL your workout, so invest in great shoes to get you through.
Also — realize that different shoes are created for different purposes; running shoes are not going to be your friend when you’re trying to weight lift. Look for great cross-trainers if you’re going to be doing a mix of activities each workout.
2. FLIPBELT OR RUNNING BELT
Arm bands for your phone are bulky and can be hard to reach. Running belts are a much better step up, but my personal favorites are FlipBelts. FlipBelts don’t move around at all, glue to your body (which is great when the waistband of your leggings isn’t doing its job), and contain items so well that you forget they’re even there. They come in several colors and are affordable-10/10 recommend!
3. EAR BUDS OR WIRELESS HEADPHONES
What’s a workout without music? You’re definitely going to want some sort of ear buds or wireless headphones. My only personal recommendation is over the ear/in ear for ear buds, and wireless for headphones.
4. WATER BOTTLE
Don’t be that person in the gym that has to go use the water fountain every five seconds. Keep a water bottle with you, and not only will you save yourself the trips back and forth for water, but you’ll drink a lot more between sets as well! My personal favorite are Ello glass water bottles-they’re sturdy, keep water cold, and make it taste so much better than metal or plastic bottles do.
5. NOTEBOOK OR TRACKING APP
Tracking your workout progress is a must; how can you tell where you need to go if you can’t see where you’ve been? You can always go for a traditional notebook and pen, but if that’s not for you, most of us have our phones on us anyway when we workout, so try an app! Bodyspace by BodyBuilding.com is a GREAT app, and totally free!
As you venture off into different types of workouts, you’ll want more gear, and that’s fine. But as long as you make sure you have the necessities starting out, you’ll be set.
