It’s no doubt that college can be a slippery slope. If you skip one day of class, you’ll be failing in no time. Set yourself up for success by knowing these 10 dos and don’ts.

1. DO introduce yourself to your professors

Don’t be the student that randomly shows up asking for extra credit during finals. Introduce yourself the first day of class. Making a good first impression will pay off later when you need help in the class.

2. DON’T let technology distract you during class

We’ve all made the mistake of texting or online shopping during class. Before you know it, the lecture will be over and you learned absolutely nothing. Have enough self-discipline to put away the technology and hone in on what your professor is saying, even if it’s not your cup of tea. You’re paying a lot for your education and it’s up to you to make the most of it.

3. DO get ahead on material

Even if it’s not required, you will benefit so much more in class when you know what’s being talked about. The information will sink in much easier and you’ll be able to ask educated questions.

4. DON’T sit in the back

Sitting in the back of the classroom may be tempting, but it won’t work to your advantage. Aim to sit as close to the front as possible. Your professor will begin to recognize your face and you will be less tempted to doze off.

5. DO get involved

Classes can get tedious, so make sure you’re also getting involved in clubs and organizations that you enjoy. Whether this is Greek life, a political club, or a volunteer organization, this will serve as a stress reliever, a place to make friends, and a way to truly discover your passions outside of class.

6. DON’T sleep the day away

It’s easy to go back home after class and sleep the day away, but this will only decrease your productivity and throw off your sleep schedule. Being active and productive during the day will allow you to get a good night’s sleep each night.

7. DO utilize your campus

You are paying for utilities on your campus like the library; find your favorite place to study or hangout on campus and use it as much as possible!

8. DON’T bite off more than you can chew

College offers so many opportunities from interesting classes to thousands of clubs. While we may want to jump into everything at once, make sure you aren’t overloading yourself. This will only lead to an unnecessary amount of meltdowns.

9. DO be aware of your resume

College will go by in the blink of an eye; make sure your resume shows that you did important things while in school. Take up volunteer opportunities, leadership roles, and internships. Simply having a degree often isn’t good enough; employers want to see life experience.

10. DON’T forget to have a little fun

College should have a healthy balance of work and play. Allow yourself to put down the homework and join your friends to hang out from time to time.

11. DO attend school events

You will regret missing your school football game much more than sitting at home on a Saturday night. Attend as many school events as possible; you won’t regret it!
